An Italian artist began the arduous task of finding a needle in a haystack on Thursday (November 13), in a two-day art installation which took the widely-used phrase at its word. New York based Sven Sachsalber will spend 48 hours sifting through the immense pile of hay at the prestigious Palais de Tokyo gallery in Paris, aiming to find a needle hidden in it by gallery President Jean de Loisy. De Loisy explained that there was more to the installation than first met the eye as it explored the complex relationship between words and actions, juxtaposing metaphors for the immensely small and the incomprehensibly large and complex. "I don't think there is anyone, regardless of whether they like modern art or not, who would not be intrigued by this childish question -- can it actually be done...

I knew every word, every nuance, of Cal Gill's amazingly plaintive vocal. The more obscure Motown groups fascinated me far more than the obvious ones. Which is why, when I started Motorcity, I sought out The Velvelettes and re-recorded my beloved favourite, this amazing classic, "Needle In A Haystack". And these Velvelettes were all four original girls. Not a substitution in sight. I continued to record them over the next few years, releasing their first ever album, something which, at the time, they had never achieved at Motown. There was also another wonderful song that I co-wrote with Ivy Jo Hunter, the legendary Motown songwriter, called "It Keeps Reminding Me (Of Happy Memories)", a song which summed up everything I tried to achieve with my Motorcity Reunion Project. When this video was filmed, on a hot August night in 1990, all four original members, Cal, Bertha, Norma, and Millie, were all on top form. When I recorded them on this classic in 1987, I tried to change it and make it more high energy, but lost the magic of the original groove, so I quickly remixed it and tried to capture that magic that made the original so special. I think this performance is also special, and I'm proud to be able to give Motown fans all over the world such an exceptional video to enjoy.

"I don't think there is anyone, regardless of whether they like modern art or not, who would not be intrigued by this childish question -- can it actually be done, or is 'Searching for a needle in a haystack' simply a turn of phrase?" he said. The two day timeframe is just an estimate, Sachsalber could take minutes to find the grand prize, just as it could take him several days of gruelling and repetitive sorting. Sachsalber said that the project was a practical one that the general public would find accessible. "It's like playing the lottery, so you don't know if you're going to win or not, you hope you're going to win otherwise why play the lottery? And it's the same thing here, even if it's hard I think, because it's itchy, this hay, and I have it everywhere after a few hours, but it's fun at the same time. And it's very accessible, I think you don't really need to understand much about art or whatever, just everyone knows what it is," he said. Although he avoids the label 'performance artist', Sachsalber has a history of engaging in unusual, even dangerous, activities in the name of art. "I have never considered myself as a conceptual artist, other people did," he said. His escapades include eating a highly toxic wild mushroom, spending 24 hours in a room with a cow, cutting down a tree he was precariously perched on and climbing over gravestones pretending to be a squirrel. "Even though it might look stupid, I just want to test out these things," he said. Recent advances in genome sequencing technologies and bioinformatics have enabled whole-genomes to be studied at population-level rather then for small number of individuals. This provides new power to whole genome association studies (WGAS ), which now seek to identify the multi-gene causes of common complex diseases like diabetes or cancer. As WGAS involve studying thousands of genomes, they pose both technological and methodological challenges. The volume of data is significant, for example the dataset from 1000 Genomes project with genomes of 2504 individuals includes nearly 85M genomic variants with raw data size of 0.8 TB. The number of features is enormous and greatly exceeds the number of samples, which makes it challenging to apply traditional statistical approaches. Random forest is one of the methods that was found to be useful in this context, both because of its potential for parallelization and its robustness. Although there is a number of big data implementations available (including Spark ML) they are tuned for typical dataset with large number of samples and relatively small number of variables, and either fail or are inefficient in the GWAS context especially, that a costly data preprocessing is usually required. To address these problems, we have developed the RandomForestHD – a Spark based implementation optimized for highly dimensional data sets. We have successfully RandomForestHD applied it to datasets beyond the reach of other tools and for smaller datasets found its performance superior. We are currently applying RandomForestHD, released as part of the VariantSpark toolkit, to a number of WGAS studies. In the presentation we will introduce the domain of WGAS and related challenges, present RandomForestHD with its design principles and implementation details with regards to Spark, compare its performance with other tools, and finally showcase the results of a few WGAS applications.

Over the last year, we have been using Go to improve the accuracy and quality of our web security scanning system that has become part of our Continuous Development pipeline and now checks all Yahoo websites and changes to them. We would like to present several components of the scanner and share some of our experiences, results, and lessons from using Go for web scanning at a large scale. Go has caught our attention after the 1.0 release with the approachable learning curve, clean syntax, good HTTP library and built-in concurrency/syncronization primitives and overall a promise of a good match for our tasks. As a warm-up and initial study, we wrote a dead link scanner to plow through thousands of sites and find a number of "bad needles" (404s) - all while running on a single server. Encouraged, we proceeded with converting several parts of the security scanning system to Go. We started with "webseclab" - set of tests for the scanner and framework to do experiments and proof of concepts/demos. It is similar in spirit to the recently released "firing range", webgoat or DVWA ("Damn Vulnerable Web Application") but thanks to the Go implementation may have special or even unique features. It is extremely easy to fire up (no dependencies and no Tomcat setup or such needed) which allows you to turn any random VM or host into a functional web security "lab". Also, switching between Go's text and html templates, we get "for free" - with just a few lines of extra code - a set of "fixed" tests where the injections are neutralized by proper output escaping which comes especially useful for training and communicating with developers. The webseclab is optimized for rapid addition of new tests and cases - we have been using it to "resurrect" already fixed issues reported through the BugBounty program and quickly convert HTTP dumps into realistic tests ready to be used for scanner improvement. The next stage of the still ongoing conversion was rewrite of the analysis engine. We named it "contextdetect" as the task of defining the HTML context is crucial for that piece, and here Go has helped us to a break-through. Gone are painful and fragile layers of regexps and scripting logic that were used to simulate HTML parsing and context detection - but still lead to bouts of either false positives or false negatives. We use net/html HTML5 parser [1] to define the HTML context where the injection happens and evaluate it accordingly. We also use Robert Krimen's Javascript parser "otto" [1] to check whether an injection breaks the Javascript (likely bad) or not. Using real parsers allowed us to reduce the number of annoying false positives close to zero and make the life of the tool's users more pleasant - while still finding the real issues (as continously verified with the webseclab). We also implemented in Go a web services wrapper that distributes the work to a number of redundant scanning workers and used "go test" for functional smoke test of the scanner. In the process of development in our CD environment, we had several challenges with the build process as the standard "go get" approach was off-limits for us and we have a strict requirement to mirror all the 3rd party code used for builds internally. Currently we are using the Android REPO tool to maintain description of the dependencies as well as specify the GOPATH-compatible workspace - we will discuss our considerations of the involved tradeoffs. While not everyone may have to be as obsessed with defending against XSS and other badness as we are, we hope that our experience will be helpful and encouraging for others who need to do large-scale web or network verification, quality assurance, or investigations. Let's go make the web a better and safer place! :) [1] https://godoc.org/golang.org/x/net/html [2] https://godoc.org/github.com/robertkrimen/otto

A hunt with some "psychic powers"... From target to target in a partially already hunted area. It was the maximum I could do in 3h on that day. The hunt almost didn't happen, because I wanted to change the location (to a pasture). I saw a tractor coming (which is always an opportunity), but the guy driving it turned out to be... I don't even know if this was the owner, or just an unfriendly worker. This was the second time, someone said "no" (or in this case didn't say anything at all). I was disappointed, because I should have trusted my instincts when I saw him from the distance. Nevertheless I was able to forget it and extract a good performance. When I look at the footage, I have to wonder why I stopped at some of the targets, because I couldn't hear the signal (it slowly shows up after a few coil swings). Maybe the microphone wasn't able to pick it up, who knows... But it looks really strange, when I analyze it. Psychic powers - this is the only explanation :). The Twilights were a very important and successful '60s pop band in Australia. This song was their highest charting hit single. Lead singer, Glenn Shorrock, had further success with the Little River Band. This song was originally released by US black girl group The Velvelettes, peaking at #45 on the Billboard Hot 100 in mid-1964. Their version is also very good.

As data sets grow they become unwieldy, making it difficult to add context through correlating security event data with other relevant data sets. Full packet capture provides a method for maintaining a forensic copy of all network conversations. However the reality up until now is that full packet capture and analysis has been bounded by the size of the data, the time to process it and the ability of applications and tools to encode key attack, deviations, mis-use and anomaly data into visualizations. When you can store all of your network data the issue then becomes how do you analyze it. How do you find the single conversation you are looking for in trillions of conversations? Big Data has supplied both a method for parallel computation and at the same time the cost of storing all network data (full packet capture) is within reach of all organizations. At the same time threats are becoming more blended, complex and difficult to find. Big Data tools such as Apache Hadoop, PIG and NoSQL databases provide the ability to perform complex network traffic analysis at petabyte scale. These tools can be leveraged using the Amazon Cloud (Elastic Map Reduce) to process, query and persist packet capture data. With these tools there is no time-cost trade off to analyzing every single conversation on a network, enriching the data, intersecting data sets and sharing anonymised data sets. Allowing you to answer questions that not many tools can: How can I find Zero Day attacks in past traffic? How can I better detect attacks at greater confidence? What is normal? What is new (never seen before)? What attackers are similar to other attacks? What is the operating system and patch level of my attackers? What protocols are strongly correlated in relation to sessions, bandwidth and payloads? What sessions are tunnels? After each attack how did the victim's sessions and protocols change? What is a normal HTTP payload for each of my web servers? - - How does an attack differ? What are attackers doing within HTTPS sessions to my websites. How can I intersect white and blacklists with my network packet captures?
